Scientific research is important for evaluating traditional medical practices, understanding their possible health applications and establishing appropriate standards for safety and quality.
The Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences introduced SPARK 5.0 for the 2026–27 academic year to encourage undergraduate Ayurveda students to develop research skills. The programme is intended to provide students with opportunities to conduct short-term independent research projects and learn research methodology.
A total of 300 studentships are being offered, with financial support of ₹50,000 for each selected student. Eligible applicants include students in the third or fourth professional year of BAMS programmes at recognised institutions.
The council also introduced Ayurshodh 2026 to recognise contributions in research communication, scholarly publications and innovation. The initiative aims to encourage stronger academic participation and improve the research ecosystem in Ayurveda.
Such programmes may help develop future researchers and promote more systematic evaluation of traditional medicine. However, the announcement is a research-development initiative, not evidence that a particular Ayurvedic treatment has been clinically proven effective.
