India is expanding its institutional infrastructure for Ayurveda and other traditional medicine systems with the inauguration of three National AYUSH Institutes.
The institutes are located in Goa, Ghaziabad and Delhi and cover Ayurveda, Unani medicine and Homoeopathy. According to the announcement, the projects represent an investment of approximately Rs 970 crore and are expected to add around 500 hospital beds and increase student intake by approximately 400.
The development is important for Ayurveda because the sector is increasingly moving toward structured education, clinical services and research rather than operating only through traditional wellness practices.
The new institutions are also expected to support research and international collaboration, potentially increasing the amount of formal scientific work involving traditional medicine.
However, expanding Ayurveda infrastructure does not by itself establish that every traditional treatment is clinically effective. Individual therapies still need appropriate evidence regarding effectiveness, dosage, safety and interactions with conventional medicines.
The expansion therefore represents both an opportunity for traditional medicine research and a need for stronger evidence-based evaluation.
